Reading a travel advisory

The US State Department rates every country on four levels. This is what each one asks of you.

  1. Exercise normal precautions

The lowest level: some risk comes with any trip abroad, so take the care you would take anywhere.

  2. Exercise increased caution

Heightened risks in places: know which areas, and at what hours, deserve more care.

  3. Reconsider travel

Serious risks to safety and security: think hard about whether the trip is worth it.

  4. Do not travel

The highest level: a greater chance of life-threatening risks, and US help on the ground may be very limited.
